Siemens eMobility and Kuehne+Nagel launch long-haul electric truck

The next generation of sustainable logistics

Kuehne+Nagel and Siemens partnered to deliver a fully electric long‑haul road solution that proves emission‑free transport can meet demanding lead times without compromise.

Summary
Results

Siemens supports the rapidly expanding eTruck and eBus market with comprehensive depot, fleet, and en‑route charging solutions.

Their portfolio includes all components of advanced, efficient DC charging infrastructure, with capabilities that go beyond physical hardware.

In this case, Siemens set out to electrify its regular truck movements from its distribution centre in Halle, Germany, to its production plant in Corroios, Portugal.

Siemens relied on the logistics expertise of Kuehne+Nagel to launch its first electric heavy-duty truck on this route, initially operating twice a month. Together, both companies demonstrate that electric trucks can seamlessly integrate into daily operations, matching the performance and runtime of diesel trucks while improving sustainability. For Siemens, electrifying this route is also part of their DEGREE approach, looking at sustainability holistically and demonstrating their commitment to leading the sustainable transformation.

Different planning, equal performance

Charging times vary with power output, and fast public chargers are relatively rare. Our driver synchronised charging with mandatory rest breaks, completing six partial charging sessions in total without impacting overall lead time.

A key operational challenge is locating truck-appropriate public charging stations. In many cases, we still rely on passenger-vehicle chargers, which often require disconnecting the trailer before charging.

The truck can carry up to 24 tonnes, which is suitable for standard long‑haul freight with average loads. For maximally dense or heavy loads requiring a full payload (28–30 tonnes), diesel trucks still offer an advantage.

Electrifying long-haul transport is not only about trucks. It’s about an ecosystem. Our charging technology, produced at our carbon-neutral Corroios plant, enabled a 5,500 km electric journey from Germany to Portugal. With partners like Kuehne+Nagel, we’re driving mobility toward a more sustainable future.
