A cleaner alternative to conventional jet fuel

SAF is a cleaner alternative to conventional jet fuel—without the need for engine modifications.

Kuehne+Nagel teams up with leading carriers and producers to foster deployment and use of bio and synthetic SAF. We want to ensure you can ship products with a considerably lower environmental impact.

The two types of sustainable air fuels

Bio-SAF

Produced from organic material, like waste, residue lipids and vegetable oil. HEFA (hydro-processed esters and fatty acids) is the only commercially available method. It reduces WTW GHG emissions vs fossil jet fuel by a minimum of 75% (up to 94%).

Synthetic SAF

Produced from renewable electricity, water and carbon dioxide (power-to-liquid). Still in development, synthetic SAF is a long‐term solution that is produced without availability limits and avoids biomass supply limitations. Can reduce emissions by up to 100%.

Book and claim

Book and claim is the chain-of-custody model that tracks and documents the environmental benefits of sustainable fuels.

Choose book and claim for all shipments, regardless of the airline or route. Here is how it works:

Kuehne+Nagel holds the emissions reduction certificates, including the litres of SAF used. We apply these certificates globally for any shipment, reducing the SAF litres in our central registry.

Book and claim has two options:

1. Retroactive

By calculating the amount of jet fuel kerosene that your shipments consumed after they have taken place, we can then use SAF to substitute that amount.

2. Opt-in:

Use SAF for an individual shipment that we offer on each quote we give to shippers. This is available on all Kuehne+Nagel air freight quoting platforms and channels, allowing you to choose this more sustainable transport via your preferred online or offline quoting method.

What happens when you fly cargo with SAF?

This is an example of a shipment from Hong Kong to Frankfurt:

  1. Kuehne+Nagel calculates the CO2 emissions caused by the shipment.

  2. The equivalent emissions are converted into SAF litres.

  3. If it is not possible to use SAF on the assigned flight, SAF is then used for another flight operated by one of our carrier partners.
